This paper was prepared for the Office of the Retirement Commissioner's  programme of research into retirement income, wealth and saving issues. Financial wealth and income in retirement can be made up from many different sources, including New Zealand Superannuation, private savings, employer pension schemes, income from employment, as well as home equity conversion loans. This report on the barriers to the use of home equity conversion loans or home equity release (HEC/ER), formed part of that research programme. October 1998.
