Improving Consumer Trust in the Retail Savings Industry

Arthur Grimes

The paper considers four sets of issues:

  1. What characteristics are required for a trusted retail savings industry? What are the attributes of a model of managed funds that meet consumer expectations and needs in terms of products and services, customer service, performance and risk management?
  2. How does the New Zealand industry currently measure up? What are its areas of strength and its weaknesses?
  3. What broad options are available to address the concerns of small savers? And amongst them, which options are of immediate potential benefit in terms of the Retirement Commission's focus on retirement savings?
  4. What specific actions might the Retirement Commission take to advance an agenda aimed at fostering a trusted (and trustworthy) retail savings industry?     April 2006.
